In regards to purchasing a domain, there are a few terms to be familiar with.

Domain Mapping
This is a Typepad feature. While in tisIf you go to www.blogsbyheather.com and then click on any post or any page….it will still say https://www.blogsbyheather.com/2008/07/blogs-by-heathe.html (for example) You will always see www.blogsbyheather.com as “part” of the address in any post you visit.
Domain Gripping or Domain Masking
If you visit the blog www.polkadotsandpaper.net, Linda is using masking. No matter what you click on in her site, it will say www.polkadotsandpaper.net in the address bar.
Domain Forward
This is when you type in a domain address like www.heatherporto.com (not a real site!) and it simply directs you to http://heatherporto.blogspot.com (which is my Blogger account). So, from then on you don’t see www.heatherporto.com at all in the address bar at all. All posts will be something like http://heatherporto.blogspot.com/2008/08/my-new-blog-blogs-by-heather.html. It was just to “direct” you or “point” you to another address, such as your blog address.
Before purchasing a domain be sure to check their available features and make sure they have the one you want.
