I just wanted to drop a quick note that if you try contacting me this weekend, I may not be able to get back to you until Monday/Tuesday depending on how hard we get hit by Hurricane Irene. We are charging up our computers and hope to have power, but are preparing for the worst.
Here are a few things we did in preparation. If you have more ideas, please post a comment and share with us.
- Went shopping – bread, milk, water, tuna, soups, cold cuts, peanut butter/jelly, hot dogs, chop meat.
- Purchase candles and batteries.
- Filled cars up with gas.
- Have cash on hand.
- Charge all cell phones, computers, kids electronic devices such as Gameboy/DS.
- Bring in a lot of items from outside and store in basement/garage.
- For grills, store propane tanks and such in a safe place.
- Pull down all shades/blinds to block windows in the event they are broken from falling trees or other debris.
- Fill up dog/cat/animal water bottles/dishes as well as food (be sure you have enough for 4-5 days).
- What we did is took our showers, bathed the kids, and then filled the bath tubs with water. This water can be used for the dogs/cats/pets if they run out of water or used to keep the toilets running in the event there are water shortages or water main breaks. (Of course, take safety precautions if you have young children.)
- Do all your laundry – plenty of clothes for the family.
I'm sure there are other little things we did (are doing) but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.
Please be safe and chat soon,
Heather 😀
Hi Heather, I hope you and your family remain safe during the storm! I am on the south shore of Long Island so we are doing everything possible to prepare. One thing I can add to your list is to be sure to pack any prescription meds if you need to leave home, or if there is still time, get to the pharmacy for refills if needed. Also, empty the auto ice maker so it can continue to make ice (put the cubes in a container). With any luck the storm will lose power as it heads our way. I hope everyone in its path is safe and sound!
HI Heather ,
Hope this finds you safe and dry! I’m not sure how close you live to water. We live in a litle Valley in PA –Chambersburg -near Gettysburg, and we are just having rain not even strong winds. My friend is a pastor and had just moved to a church a week ago in the Bahamas and she weathered the storm like a trooper. I know people near OC, MD really had some terrible destruction. Stay safe and snuggle with your family
